Childhood Phases Helped Save My Life!

Alex and Taz!

As I think about nearing 30 years on this planet , I think of the saving graces. Two of those saving graces stare me right in the face here in 2021!

30 years in the making of this life, of course the biggest life-savers have been the doctors and the nurses and my core family who have stuck by each and every day of this journey. But through any chaotic health crisis, isn’t normalcy wanted?

Isn’t normalcy a priority for a child that needs hospital time more so than other kids? My folks sure thought so! So, they let me live out my childhood phases to the fullest. Two of those phases have hit me right between the eyes !

On Friday night, July 30th, the Mets will don their classic black jersey for the first time in nearly 15-20 years. An exciting moment for sure since they turned to a blue jersey over last couple of years. Personally, I used to want every kind of black jersey the Mets had worn in the 90s! From the home to the road, to Mike Piazza shirts, and even the black Mets cap! My folks took me to Grand Slam Sports in Times Square, NYC and let me immerse in that jersey-wearing glory! Which I continue to immerse myself in.

Back then , however, sports jerseys were an escape from whatever health ailment I had dealt with any given week! I even would wear a Yankee or Mets (or even Cubs/Blackhawks) to the hospital as sort of a security blanket I guess ! So thanks mom, pop and my stepdad for never discouraging me from this phase because wearing sports jerseys definitely helped me through the rough times!

Another phase that hit me this week was my love of Taz, the Looney Toons’ own Tazmanian Devil! Whether it was his whirling dervishes, or just his chaotic intensity I loved that dude ! I got what felt like all his shirts and even a plush Taz ! I see that he his in Space Jam 2 now!

Childhood phases today look a lot different and I wasn’t going to go here but let’s talk about it. Children today seem more encouraged to feel like who they identify with rather than how they were made by God. I don’t believe it’s trans-phobic to say a childhood phase of gender dysphoria may not last forever , so to explore the idea even to point of body reconstruction does feel wrong to me in a body as young as 9-16/17 years old. Keeping an eye out on these phases feels the best course of action , rather than bowing down to taking action then and there when you most likely know what’s best for your child over any radical activists that say otherwise!

For me this summer, however, it appears I’ll be reliving my childhood this summer, or at least looking back on it as thank God for these phases that kept me going then and inspire me to keep going now!

We Are A Return on Investment

When we talk about ROI, normally it’s in the context of what WE can get back for something we’ve invested in.

Yet, has it ever come to mind that individuals have an ROI attached to them? That companies INVEST in individuals like you or I expecting RESULTS? Companies also don’t just invest in anyone, they are investing in YOU and maybe if thinking of it that way, we can throw out the phrase ‘just another day at the office’.

I never like being told a job is a job, because I don’t feel like the 9-5 type any how. Add on to that this idea that a company pays me personally to get the job done, yes I want to show them the ROI in my work is worth it day in and day out. I also just love working hard, i can’t think of it another way.

It also comes to mind that people are getting used to government benefits like the stimulus checks that they don’t want to go back to work. I can’t imagine it’s a majority of the country, but numbers still show a slow hiring process due to unwillingness to work. What if we instilled in people that companies are willing to re-invest in them and their talents? Wouldn’t that inspire them to stop relying on government help and become Independent again?

It’s Independence Day weekend, don’t be afraid to be an Independent worker who realizes their worth and realizes they aren’t meant to be on the government dime forever.

We are not celebrating Independence Day just to be dependent on Uncle Sam 24/7!

I talked about this on my latest podcast on the idea of ROI being reflected on us as well!

Being Selective While Being Disabled

Next month, the disabled community works towards gaining more acceptance 31 years after the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act. While the work is never done smashing stigma and gaining acceptance, let’s adapt the goal! Let’s be selective!

Selectivity is a topic that has come up over the last week, so I feel compelled to write about this idea! I also think God has put us where we are meant to be in life, and gives us the intuition to be selective !

I promise you , I am not jaded about people. I LOVE people, I love socializing. This pandemic has made me too anxious about not seeing friends again if I’m honest. Yet, I am more eyes-open about people’s motives having about 11 years into adulthood now.

To be widely accepted has been excited , to be able to announce in college had been exciting has heck. I was happy-go-lucky and wanted to be friends with everybody because that is my nature . All my life , I never thought I couldn’t make friends because I have one leg . If I didn’t think people would gravitate and I couldn’t get the nerve to gravitate toward people, I would have just stayed home!

Yet, in college , there were a couple people who saw the energy I was putting out there and DRAINED me. I was pushed around on my skate by a ‘friend’ and he almost knocked me over. I had enough of that friendship, especially when it felt financially tied together. Friendship shouldn’t be bought, it’s a lesson I’ve learned for years. It also was my awakening to the fact that maybe I did try to be friends with everybody . Again, I did that just because that who is I am. Regardless, some I feel in the disabled community consciously try to become friend with everyone because they are scared to be selective . It’s 2021, DON’T BE SCARED TO BE SELECTIVE!

On the outside looking in some might think we have trouble making friends. So, I’ve seen they take that thought and try to be buddy-buddy only for ulterior motives to be revealed as things move along, specifically someone like my former college friend . On dating, some might think we try too hard instead of point blank putting in the effort to get to truly know us and to understand us!

While we want acceptance, knowing our worth in this world will gain acceptance even more and move our life forward. We also have to face the fact , not all can accept us as is, and it’s ok to not accept all into our sphere. Let me write that again, not all can accept us as is, and it’s ok to not accept all into our sphere.

If we are selective, it can also help us stay healthy. Mentally trying to make a friendship work will actually deter us from staying healthy. Being wrapped up in relationship worries that don’t work out because we feel we can’t do better will bring us down a few notches also.

Let’s keep smashing stigma in 2021. Prove that we don’t have trouble , we just really are selective! I’ve got a good corps of good friends that I can rely on and just have fun times with, that’s all I can really ask for!

The Viscardi Center is Synonymous With Greatness

It’s only fitting that a little school and center on Long Island produces greatness . Fact is the Viscardi Center was BUILT with greatness and on a foundation of greatness.

If you know anything about Dr. Henry Viscardi, you would know how great a man he was. He , himself, overcame having limbs that were underdeveloped requiring prosthetic legs. His life experience inspired him to help others and provide opportunities for those returning war veterans who became disabled during combat in World War II! That center, Human Resources, grew and added The Henry Viscardi School for kids with disabilities .

I’m very humbled to say I became a graduate of HVS in 2009. I had gone to school there from K-12 ! A large part of my current day motivation is influenced by seeing friends in the disabled community and HVS community adapt and thrive! Stories from this community can help others ease into adaptation for their current day situations, I know it!

What also makes HVS so great is that our community welcomes greatness! I can discuss so many different ways the Viscardi Center community welcomes greatness , but to be topical I’d like to focus on the Islanders partnership. As you may know , the Islanders are about to face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the semi-finals!

Since I can remember , the current New York Islanders have played hockey with the Viscardi kids year in and year out at HVS. The catch was that these tall hockey players would become wheelchair-bound and be on the level with fast kids in power wheelchairs and regular wheelchairs. The Islanders humbled themselves because they wanted to experience the incredible spirit HVS students have! (https://www.viscardicenter.org/ny-islanders-play-hockey-at-hvs/)

The Islanders have also made available legends such as Bobby Nystrom and Clark Gillies to join our annual gala which raises funds for the Viscardi Center and Viscardi School ! For a tough group of guys, this kind of outreach show how much of a heart these hockey guys can have for the community and I am here for it!

The Viscardi Center on YouTube

When you cheer them on against Tampa this series , remember that these guys do it for the community and that community, I’m proud to say, includes that little but GREAT place in Albertson known as the Henry Viscardi Center !

What Is Bob Brenly Du-Ing

This question has been rattling my mind since the former manager of the Diamondbacks made a remark about Marcus Stroman wearing his du-rag on the mound.

For the exact quote, Brenly said , “I’m sure that’s the same du-rag Tom Seaver used to wear”. Talk about something out of left field ! What puzzles me about this controversy is Brenly himself had to defend Byung-Hyun Kim from cultural judgements in NYC! Kim had given up three straight games in NYC as the Diamondbacks closer in the 2001 World Series. From what I remember Kim was joked on on SNL. While the D-Backs won that World Series, Kim discussed the legacy of his career years later . (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/.amp/mlb/2019/07/03/byung-hyun-kim-diamondbacks-yankees-world-series?fbclid=IwAR3ZAnVs3bOq9Szo_aPNFwDcIZXOYiNsZ7WIEj5Rilxrr8uL_W3N4pqsskE)

For Brenly, I’d ask him what did he learn in that experience 20 years ago? It feels like he didn’t learn anything after hearing Tuesday’s comment!

Right now, Brenly has stepped away from the Diamondbacks broadcast booth after the backlash he received. He even released a statement that acknowledges he needs to undergo sensitivity training. How does a man who is a veteran of the game and of broadcasting in his 60s need to undergo sensitivity training? Does a hot mic really mean an open mic for some of these people?

The circumstance of that comment also surfaced because the benches DID clear after Stroman and the D-Backs own Josh Rojas were jawing at each other . Keep in mind the Diamondbacks have been frustrated going 5-26 in May! Was that a reason why a grown man like Bob Brenly would make that comment about Stroman? Is he frustrated in the broadcast booth too??

Bob Brenly said he was trying to be funny. I hate the cancel culture as much as anyone, but the comment made about Stroman’s headwear was crossing the line. My suggestion is that Stro wear one over his Met hat now just to prove the point that is his preference and he won’t let anyone deter him from wearing a du-rag on the mound. It’s very much his comfort zone to excel for the Mets, you can just see it.

Oh and Stroman just needs to keep doing his thing for the Mets, after all this team is in first place! Enjoy the basement , Bob Brenly !

We The People Are Not The Government

In President Biden’s real first address to the nation, one clip that stood out to me was when he said “It’s time to remember that We The People are the Government.” That quote should be disturbing to anyone who loves their Independence and quite frankly enjoys the Independence Day fireworks displays.

I am convinced if President Biden was tasked with leading the Continental Army , he would have said that all of the colonies had to remember Britain was the government. Thank God George Washington believed in Self-governance!

God did help us break away from Britain in 1776, and I also say this country was also founded on the idea of self-governance. We did not want Britain to tell us what the hell to do! If you love America, you cannot let the POTUS tell us the government is the people. That includes raising heck when our taxes continually increase once again.

Beyond economics, it seemed President Biden was telling Americans to become bureaucratic! After all, the government is bureaucracy in the sickest form. America’s neighborhoods are not meant to be bureaucratic but caring for one another. Americans don’t generally believe in ratting each other out to the State, yet I believe that is a part of what Biden was saying in that quote!

I shiver when I consider this country ‘s government the State. Many fled Russia when the communist accountability to the State ruled the day. We aren’t built to be conforming to what the FEDERAL level says all the time. We have States’ Rights for a reason! That’s in the CONSTITUTION!

Many tout the idea of self-love , but not many preach self-governance. Self-governance is the way we will sustain in these times. Being responsible for ourselves and not totally getting comfortable with stimulus after stimulus is what will put America ‘on the move again’.

I get the feeling more will sue this administration and bank on the Justice System to help maintain self-governance. The lawsuit was utilized to force Gov. Cuomo to cave to businesses thirsting for some hope amidst the iron fist of Andrew Cuomo’s executive powers. Those business owners showed they could govern themselves and their businesses better than any Governor on a power trip can!

It should alarm many that this mindset of We The People being the government probably means a radical shift into allowing the government to take MORE control . To give the government more excuses to limit churchgoing activities or limit basically any right we have in this country . The commentary by Joe Biden was a far cry from President Reagan who famously said, “The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

Let’s govern ourselves by standing up for ourselves, neighbors, family and friends. Let’s not fall into the hands of the State, or we will lose America forever! I love this country and would like to keep. With this blog, I’m hoping to speak self-governance into existence even more!

I went into more details on a recent podcast including the lawsuit by South Dakota Governor Noem against the Biden administration when it comes to a fireworks ban over Mt. Rushmore!

I’m Vaccinated, But I Won’t Bully Those Who Aren’t Vaccinated !

AlexGNYC1 2021

This was a joyous moment! The whole process of being vaccinated was in a sense magical. Two weeks ago, I completed the final dose of Pfizer thanks to NYC Health and Hospitals+ ! Hence I am fully vaccinated! Or so I thought , I’ll get to that in a bit.

However, the walk-in process felt special and right now, walk-in appointments are available if you so desire to become vaccinated! (http://on.nyc.gov/walkupvax)

I utilize this platform to simply encourage , not judge you if you don’t want to get a vaccine due to health concerns and the news surrounding after-effects. Trust me, I was nervous of side-effects of vaccine two as well. I also don’t believe in threats against resuming society if not every person is vaccinated.

Not every person gets the flu vaccine, and they have that right , why not the right in this instance as well as COVID cases decline?

My journey of what I believed is considered fully vaccinated feels exciting moving forward. Will we really need a third shot? Will I get that third shot if so? Time will tell. For now, I’m excited to just get back to the ballyard for baseball this summer . Excited to roll around the city a little more carefree than before and just enjoy a BETTER normal in our city, NEW YORK CITY. Let’s bring it back baby!

I just hope that America is not held hostage by the idea of the vaccine. We have freedoms in this country and thank GOD we haven’t mandated legislatively this vaccine. Yet, the pressures told to us that we can’t get back to normal unless we all get vaccinated is such a pressure campaign, it disheartens me.

The Oscars had everyone vaccinated, but why aren’t these stars doing ANYTHING to ease the distrust some of America still has? The President and the VP got the vaccine on CAMERA, yet they too don’t encourage us to get the vaccine , only threatening us if we don’t get that shot in the arm!

So if pressuring and bullying is what our leaders will resort to, I say just let us live! Heck, let us be vaxxed if so desired and enjoy those benefits. But, most importantly let us be adults in the room, Americans CAN handle themselves!

Alex Garrett to NYC: ‘Let’s Get Goin’

On my latest podcast, I broke down the graphic above showing how just 25 PERCENT of NEW YORKERS are seeking employment ! This city, this state is much more driven than that, it’s up to local leaders and the media to instill confidence again!

Find out on my podcast why I say to New York City : LET’s GET GOING!
