I May Be Vaccinated and Hate Wearing Masks But I’ll Mask Up

I’ve come to the realization that being vaccinated made me too stubborn. It also, from an outsider perspective, probably made me look like a disrespectful jerk in a way.

Being unmasked even in 2021 seems to be a sign of disrespect. The mask is a major comfort zone for some. That is why even though I’m triple vaccinated and have (Thanks Be To God) not caught COVID, I’ll mask up again in various scenarios.

You won’t really catch me on the streets of NYC outdoors masked up, but on your local subway or even bus, I’ll mask up for the comfort of others. This all hit me about a week ago when someone on an elevator asked where my mask was. She too was vaccinated but did not want to take any chances . I respect that as Omicron is flying around the country and of course the media is making people panic about it!

Yet, this war over masks in my view has gone beyond what’s on TV. People that mask up are making a personal choice to stay safe . When you are not masked indoors around others especially on public transportation , I am starting to truly feel that not being masked is telling people their safety and worries don’t matter. I feel the only way to respect that choice is by masking up even if vaccinated in spaces like a subway, elevator or bus. Even a workspace where your colleague asks you to mask up. For me, masking up is and has never been conforming to what the government says, it’s been what you feel is best for yourself. I’ve seen many (myself included ) flout those loud public address announcements on the MTA, that’s how I know it’s become more of a personal choice.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope masks are gone in 2022. That will happen in God’s time, I know! By the way, we are not China where they are masked up due to horrible environmental conditions . Yet, I understand this pandemic has put the fear of God into people and those feelings of a safe commute must be respected . Especially if we want NYC to come back stronger together!

The Hulk of a Holiday Season In 2021

We all know The Hulk. He’s that iconic Marvel character that just explodes as the mind of Bruce Banner becomes polluted with thoughts.

It’s time to recognize the emotional Hulk that lurks in ALL OF US. Can you admit that yes you bottle up until the meltdown instead of having the dialogue needed? At least I can. That’s why I want to address it for the Holiday Season!

I can say it was an emotion-filled week and the after-math of that has brought me more awareness. My experience of late has been just trying to analyze a lot of little things to the point where it gets me to either tear up at a bar OR just shut down. That’s the bluntness I have to offer. F THE LITTLE THINGS.

I also cry at times too and when I’m done I’m like why did I do that? Sometimes it’s just awkward for myself and the people I care about around me. It feels like a ‘Hulk’ takes over and there is no going back.

So why am I saying all this? To again crush that emotional Hulk that could be felt during the holiday season. This is a time where we have to worry about the vaccine status to even live some kind of normal life. Add family dynamics during the holidays, angst about traveling and oh by the way a lingering pandemic , yes, that is a Hulk of a Seasons Greetings isn’t it?

The best saying I can is a SAVOR THE HOLIDAYS ! We are able to celebrate with family again! That should be joyous, not stressing ! God is giving us a chance to live again also as we are about to honor the birth of The Son of God! So savor the holidays and don’t let the Emotional Hulk SAVAGE your 2021 Holiday Season!

Merry Christmas!

SOCIETY CANNOT BE CHECKED OUT IN 2022

I can’t explain it, I really can’t! Yet, there is a massive feeling that the world has adapted to just being checked out right now. On the whole. We have to re-adapt ourselves !

In America, we have got a supply chain crisis. We have trucking issues where there is a shortage of drivers. THERE IS EVEN A SHORTAGE ON SANTA this Christmas season (https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-santas-short-supply-covid-19-fears-christmas-2021-11?amp). And the general consensus seems to be a big shrug. Email me if I’m wrong at Alex@alexgnyc.com.

I really hope that when 2022 rolls around, mandates are lifted and society can check back in once again. For society’s sake we can no longer be checked out. The continuous grind of a news cycle that offers no hope, fears that if you don’t get vaccinated you will be excommunicated from the world and the unwillingness to work are ultimately destroying us.

It’s the unwillingness to work that is bothering me. Why do we have these shortages? No one wants to do the job any more. Is that truly possible? Isn’t America the roll up your sleeves and just do it country? Well a pandemic and being used to stimulus checks a year later, and even unemployment, there is no encouragement to get back to work. In September alone, ‘a record 4.4 million people’ QUIT their job , QUIT! (https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/11/12/economy/job-openings-quits-september/index.html)

In New York City, it’s continued to be discussed that work spaces should be turned into affordable housing. THESE GIANT OFFICE SPACES to be turned into a home? (https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/11/new-york-shrinking-offices-housing-520318) The way to keep work going is if we encourage people to get BACK to the office! The more people work from home the more checked out we become. Also, as busy as it is starting to be, this lifelong New Yorker still doesn’t feel that is back 100%, that’s what I pray for in 2022.

Here’s the biggest gripe I have. The more people are encouraged to work from home. The more people are becoming OK with unemployment, the more lulled to sleep this society becomes . Allowing, Big Brother to step in and tell us what to do. Thank God Virginia was awake on Election Night and went Red. It was a refreshing feeling that we could be just an election away from getting out of this slog created by prolonged lockdowns and mandates and even job threats if an agenda of vaccination was not met. I’d add the hypocrisy these Democratic leaders like former Gov. Cuomo and California Gov. Gavin Newsom has tired us all out!

Holding life over our heads if we don’t comply is not what America is. America and its leadership should let us LIVE LIFE once again 2022, and we should all check back in to society before the fabric is pulled out from under us! God is also guiding us through this, I remind myself daily!

Is the Eviction Moratorium A Fair Shake For All?

As a Nee York City lifer, I’ve always enjoyed the apartment life. I loved living in one until the time was right to move with my family to Queens. Yet, as this pandemic winds on, to read reports that tenants are bailing their apartments and skipping out on paying rent , I have to ask if the eviction moratorium is what progressives would like to call a ‘fair share’.

This idea of a fair share should not pertain to just the tenant, it must also pertain to the landlord who is owed the rent every first of the month. To answer whether this Eviction Moratorium is a fair share policy, I turned to Cassin and Cassin , LLP partner Steve Ebert. You can hear Steve Saturday Mornings on Eye on Real Estate with Dottie Herman 10-12 on AM 970 the Answer!

Imagine President Joe Biden Building A Colosseum?

It may sound outlandish, but the way Zocalo Public Square talked about Roman Emperor Hadrian, you’d think they were praising President Biden for his deadly exit out of Afghanistan !

Zocalo Public Square is very fascinating and very Left-leaning which makes these comparisons even more entertaining. In a piece by Edward Watts, Professor Watts gives detail by detail how a withdrawal from war against Parthia made life better for Romans and the Roman Empire in the 100s. (https://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2021/09/09/roman-emperor-hadrian-unwinnable-war/) Now, as an aside, was the collapse of the Roman Empire (which this withdrawal undoubtedly led to) a better future for Rome? I’m not professing to being a history professor like Dr. Watts but the fall of Rome is well-freakin-documented.

Let’s look at the parallels Dr. Watts illustrates with the 100s withdrawal by Emperor Hadrian and the details of the Afghanistan withdrawal . In this piece , Dr. Watts writes, “The anonymous author of the Historia Augustawrote, Hadrian “relinquished all of the conquests across the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers.” He later quotes the new emperor as saying that “those areas that can not be defended, should be declared liberated” and returned to local control. Hadrian left the defense of these regions up to the allied governments Rome had just installed.”

Instead of admitting we had no plan for leaving that would be successful, President Biden laid blame for the fall of Afghanistan at the feet of the Afghan troops, saying, “The Afghan military collapsed, sometimes without trying to fight.” Meanwhile 13 of our very own service members were killed in explosions by terrorists forces aiding the Taliban. This collapse falls on the US and it worries me, it could lead to the fall of the United States (yet I believe God will prevent that!)

The most stunning comparison made is infrastructure. Dr. Watts notes that Hadrian BUILT THE PANTHEON as well as Temple of Zeus after this withdrawal. These structures are iconic , and I truly wonder if this 3+ trillion Dollar infrastructure bill leads President Biden to think he can build his very own Colosseum in America. The guy is kinda out of it!

For Edward Watts to say this though in light of the eventual fall of Rome feels like a half-hearted attempt to say withdrawal out of a country without any plan can strengthen a country. “Hadrian spent much of his reign traveling across the empire, repairing infrastructure, and building new public buildings. Hadrian’s Wall in Britain, the Pantheon in Rome, and the massive Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens are among his most famous infrastructure projects.”

I would rather keep this country built 245 years ago, than a massive structure as a remnant of an empire! 20 years ago two towers were brought down, yet that didn’t bring the US down! We must save this country years later!

I also just can’t see President Biden having the wherewithal to build immaculate buildings, when he can’t even finish building a sentence!

PS: Hadrian took over for Emperor Trajan , is that historic name where Trojan Horse comes from?

Childhood Phases Helped Save My Life!

Alex and Taz!

As I think about nearing 30 years on this planet , I think of the saving graces. Two of those saving graces stare me right in the face here in 2021!

30 years in the making of this life, of course the biggest life-savers have been the doctors and the nurses and my core family who have stuck by each and every day of this journey. But through any chaotic health crisis, isn’t normalcy wanted?

Isn’t normalcy a priority for a child that needs hospital time more so than other kids? My folks sure thought so! So, they let me live out my childhood phases to the fullest. Two of those phases have hit me right between the eyes !

On Friday night, July 30th, the Mets will don their classic black jersey for the first time in nearly 15-20 years. An exciting moment for sure since they turned to a blue jersey over last couple of years. Personally, I used to want every kind of black jersey the Mets had worn in the 90s! From the home to the road, to Mike Piazza shirts, and even the black Mets cap! My folks took me to Grand Slam Sports in Times Square, NYC and let me immerse in that jersey-wearing glory! Which I continue to immerse myself in.

Back then , however, sports jerseys were an escape from whatever health ailment I had dealt with any given week! I even would wear a Yankee or Mets (or even Cubs/Blackhawks) to the hospital as sort of a security blanket I guess ! So thanks mom, pop and my stepdad for never discouraging me from this phase because wearing sports jerseys definitely helped me through the rough times!

Another phase that hit me this week was my love of Taz, the Looney Toons’ own Tazmanian Devil! Whether it was his whirling dervishes, or just his chaotic intensity I loved that dude ! I got what felt like all his shirts and even a plush Taz ! I see that he his in Space Jam 2 now!

Childhood phases today look a lot different and I wasn’t going to go here but let’s talk about it. Children today seem more encouraged to feel like who they identify with rather than how they were made by God. I don’t believe it’s trans-phobic to say a childhood phase of gender dysphoria may not last forever , so to explore the idea even to point of body reconstruction does feel wrong to me in a body as young as 9-16/17 years old. Keeping an eye out on these phases feels the best course of action , rather than bowing down to taking action then and there when you most likely know what’s best for your child over any radical activists that say otherwise!

For me this summer, however, it appears I’ll be reliving my childhood this summer, or at least looking back on it as thank God for these phases that kept me going then and inspire me to keep going now!

We Are A Return on Investment

When we talk about ROI, normally it’s in the context of what WE can get back for something we’ve invested in.

Yet, has it ever come to mind that individuals have an ROI attached to them? That companies INVEST in individuals like you or I expecting RESULTS? Companies also don’t just invest in anyone, they are investing in YOU and maybe if thinking of it that way, we can throw out the phrase ‘just another day at the office’.

I never like being told a job is a job, because I don’t feel like the 9-5 type any how. Add on to that this idea that a company pays me personally to get the job done, yes I want to show them the ROI in my work is worth it day in and day out. I also just love working hard, i can’t think of it another way.

It also comes to mind that people are getting used to government benefits like the stimulus checks that they don’t want to go back to work. I can’t imagine it’s a majority of the country, but numbers still show a slow hiring process due to unwillingness to work. What if we instilled in people that companies are willing to re-invest in them and their talents? Wouldn’t that inspire them to stop relying on government help and become Independent again?

It’s Independence Day weekend, don’t be afraid to be an Independent worker who realizes their worth and realizes they aren’t meant to be on the government dime forever.

We are not celebrating Independence Day just to be dependent on Uncle Sam 24/7!

I talked about this on my latest podcast on the idea of ROI being reflected on us as well!

Being Selective While Being Disabled

Next month, the disabled community works towards gaining more acceptance 31 years after the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act. While the work is never done smashing stigma and gaining acceptance, let’s adapt the goal! Let’s be selective!

Selectivity is a topic that has come up over the last week, so I feel compelled to write about this idea! I also think God has put us where we are meant to be in life, and gives us the intuition to be selective !

I promise you , I am not jaded about people. I LOVE people, I love socializing. This pandemic has made me too anxious about not seeing friends again if I’m honest. Yet, I am more eyes-open about people’s motives having about 11 years into adulthood now.

To be widely accepted has been excited , to be able to announce in college had been exciting has heck. I was happy-go-lucky and wanted to be friends with everybody because that is my nature . All my life , I never thought I couldn’t make friends because I have one leg . If I didn’t think people would gravitate and I couldn’t get the nerve to gravitate toward people, I would have just stayed home!

Yet, in college , there were a couple people who saw the energy I was putting out there and DRAINED me. I was pushed around on my skate by a ‘friend’ and he almost knocked me over. I had enough of that friendship, especially when it felt financially tied together. Friendship shouldn’t be bought, it’s a lesson I’ve learned for years. It also was my awakening to the fact that maybe I did try to be friends with everybody . Again, I did that just because that who is I am. Regardless, some I feel in the disabled community consciously try to become friend with everyone because they are scared to be selective . It’s 2021, DON’T BE SCARED TO BE SELECTIVE!

On the outside looking in some might think we have trouble making friends. So, I’ve seen they take that thought and try to be buddy-buddy only for ulterior motives to be revealed as things move along, specifically someone like my former college friend . On dating, some might think we try too hard instead of point blank putting in the effort to get to truly know us and to understand us!

While we want acceptance, knowing our worth in this world will gain acceptance even more and move our life forward. We also have to face the fact , not all can accept us as is, and it’s ok to not accept all into our sphere. Let me write that again, not all can accept us as is, and it’s ok to not accept all into our sphere.

If we are selective, it can also help us stay healthy. Mentally trying to make a friendship work will actually deter us from staying healthy. Being wrapped up in relationship worries that don’t work out because we feel we can’t do better will bring us down a few notches also.

Let’s keep smashing stigma in 2021. Prove that we don’t have trouble , we just really are selective! I’ve got a good corps of good friends that I can rely on and just have fun times with, that’s all I can really ask for!

The Viscardi Center is Synonymous With Greatness

It’s only fitting that a little school and center on Long Island produces greatness . Fact is the Viscardi Center was BUILT with greatness and on a foundation of greatness.

If you know anything about Dr. Henry Viscardi, you would know how great a man he was. He , himself, overcame having limbs that were underdeveloped requiring prosthetic legs. His life experience inspired him to help others and provide opportunities for those returning war veterans who became disabled during combat in World War II! That center, Human Resources, grew and added The Henry Viscardi School for kids with disabilities .

I’m very humbled to say I became a graduate of HVS in 2009. I had gone to school there from K-12 ! A large part of my current day motivation is influenced by seeing friends in the disabled community and HVS community adapt and thrive! Stories from this community can help others ease into adaptation for their current day situations, I know it!

What also makes HVS so great is that our community welcomes greatness! I can discuss so many different ways the Viscardi Center community welcomes greatness , but to be topical I’d like to focus on the Islanders partnership. As you may know , the Islanders are about to face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the semi-finals!

Since I can remember , the current New York Islanders have played hockey with the Viscardi kids year in and year out at HVS. The catch was that these tall hockey players would become wheelchair-bound and be on the level with fast kids in power wheelchairs and regular wheelchairs. The Islanders humbled themselves because they wanted to experience the incredible spirit HVS students have! (https://www.viscardicenter.org/ny-islanders-play-hockey-at-hvs/)

Via Sam Tavarez Productions on YouTube

The Islanders have also made available legends such as Bobby Nystrom and Clark Gillies to join our annual gala which raises funds for the Viscardi Center and Viscardi School ! For a tough group of guys, this kind of outreach show how much of a heart these hockey guys can have for the community and I am here for it!

The Viscardi Center on YouTube

When you cheer them on against Tampa this series , remember that these guys do it for the community and that community, I’m proud to say, includes that little but GREAT place in Albertson known as the Henry Viscardi Center !
